Science students are often presented with a single ladder: medicine at the top, everything else beneath it. That framing costs students good careers. Here is a wider, more honest map.
Health sciences beyond medicine
Nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, radiography, biomedical science and public health all offer clinical or scientific work with shorter routes to practice than medicine, and in several countries better hiring rates.

Applied and environmental sciences
Environmental science, agricultural science and food science apply biology and chemistry to problems governments and companies are actively funding: climate adaptation, food security, water quality and emissions reporting.

Science plus data
The most consistently employable combination for science students today is a science degree plus quantitative skills. Bioinformatics, epidemiology and environmental data analysis all sit at that intersection and have fewer qualified applicants than employers want.
How to choose between them
Ask two questions: do you want patient contact, laboratory work, or fieldwork? And do you want to practise a regulated profession or work in research and analysis? Those two answers eliminate most of the list quickly.
